thankful [26 Nov 2009|10:22am]
[ mood | cooking ]

i'm not going to go into an endless list of what i'm thankful for. so here's a few quick ones.

i am in the midst of making cornbread muffins, and i'll be thankful if they turn out edible.

i'm thankful for all of you, and not just today. everyday.

happy turkey day! may you be in good health and spirits.

off day [19 Nov 2009|07:11am]
[ mood | automatic ]

sometimes you wake up in the morning, and all you really feel like doing is staying home, curling up, and playing video games or watching movies.

then the auto-pilot kicks in, and off you go to be a cog in the machine.

whee~

a subject for this post does not come to mind.

earlier tonight whilst browsing about the web, i happened upon a video titled The Largest Street Gang In America.

it's very telling.

i fully realize that it is edited together to provide the most effect upon the viewer. i fully realize that it is not a representation of every member of the therein documented community. i fully acknowledge that i might be opening a hornet's nest by even posting it up.

what it does show, however, is disturbing. and informative.

if anything, knowledge is power.

work and visitors [16 Oct 2009|04:30am]
[ mood | awake ]

another early morning flight today, heading to maui to fix a printer tray that won't feed paper to the printer. isn't my job full of exciting and interesting times!

carl is currently on island visiting. we're headed to delicious delicious sushi tonight with rita ([info]islanderatheart). speaking of, rita has moved back to hawaii after her year and a half vacation to seattle. at least that's how we're explaining it.

also had another visitor yesterday in the form of one ben hahn, my old boss when i was an ra for a year in college. he spent a week on kauai with his wife, and i picked the two of them up from the airport here on oahu and went to dinner yesterday. it was fun to see them again; ben has always been a cool guy.

if i were to start posting some of my photos here (behind cuts), would folks be interested in seeing them?

i'm also debating whether i'd watermark them.

and that's that [01 Oct 2009|04:47pm]
[ mood | disappointed ]

so the philippines trip is no go.

i'm bummed. mostly because of the planning that my friend ben put into this, and that he already spent money to get there, and is now having to turn around and fly out. partly because we've been planning this trip for a good 3 months or longer. and partly because of the let down after so much anticipation.

but i'm not going to risk flying through this (requires flash).

countdown t-minus day 3: halt [28 Sep 2009|09:39pm]
so it now looks like the trip to manila may be canceled entirely.

for those who have not heard, manila and the surrounding areas were hit by a typhoon, causing the worst flooding in 40-some years. continuing news coverage shows the situation to be rather bleak.

there is a list of places that one can make donations if able.

i'm waiting to see what my travel partner, who's supposed to be arriving in manila as i type this, has to say on the situation from the ground there.

while it sucks that i've been waiting for this trip for 3 some months, that disappointment is stupid in comparison to the disaster that has befallen the people who live there. if i do end up going, i'm going to spend some time there volunteering to do what i'm able. if i don't, i'm going to take the money that i've already exchanged and donate it.

health insurance [20 Sep 2009|10:19am]
[ mood | angry ]

i just sent the following letter to all of my reps in washington:

Dear Mr. (President/Senator/Congressman),

I write today as a citizen concerned about the direction that the Health Care Reform effort is heading in. I do applaud the effort that is being put forth, and I agree that change in our healthcare system must be made. However, I do not agree that forcing people into healthcare coverage by penalizing them for not having it will bring about a beneficial result.

People who cannot afford healthcare now cannot afford it for a reason--they are in a situation where it is not provided by their employer, they have been denied coverage due to a pre-existing condition, or they cannot afford the premiums from private insurers. Forcing people to pay for insurance they cannot afford will only benefit one party -- the healthcare insurance companies, who stand to make billions off of the sudden influx of "required" customers. This is their dream come true.

Instead, what this country needs is a single-payer, non-profit, national health insurance plan. This removes any financial incentive on a private for-profit insurer's part to make sure that they keep as much money as they can, and deny coverage through as many loopholes as possible, or pay as little as possible as a result.

How will penalizing people for not spending their hard-earned money, or money that they don't have to begin with, help them? How will forcing them to give that money to the very problem -- the for-profit health insurance industry -- help solve the issues that will continue if the present system persists?

I urge you, Mr. (President/Senator/Congressman), to work with Congress to formulate a non-profit, national plan that will give better coverage to all. Turn aside the greed of the private health insurance industry, and look at where the model has worked in so many other countries around the world to lower costs and improve care for everyone.

Mahalo for your time,

(signature)

after reading this article, i tried to find as much out as i could. i'm curious, how many here on lj have healthcare? through what means (employer, private plan, medicaid, etc)? what would happen if you had to start paying for healthcare because you don't currently have it?

this issue is one of the hardest to get right, and i'm afraid that it's slipping through the nation's fingers due to fearmongering and private interests. i'm really, genuinely afraid.

and i'm pissed that i don't feel like i can do much about it.

joggin' [17 Sep 2009|07:29pm]
finally, after dragging my butt for too long, i got shorts, shoes, and hit the road today.

it was only a short jog to start off, walk-run-walk. gotta start of somewhere right?

here's hoping the trend continues.

user error [14 Sep 2009|12:14pm]
[ mood | facepalming ]

usually, when ever i'm at work, user error is the primary cause of many of the issues that we encounter.

sadly, i am also a user.

i've been working on setting up a vpn at work. this will allow us to set up these copier payment stations at remote locations which will then communicate across the vpn to the payment server in our office.

except that the payment server has to be able to see the remote copier, and for the life of me, i couldn't get it to work. i could communicate from the remote side to the server just fine, just not from the server to the remote side.

then i double checked the network configuration on all of the involved devices.

yea.

turns out the gateway ip address on the copier was set incorrectly.

...yea.

so how's your day?

it looks like the red hat class might actually start this saturday, so i'm pouring over the material again to make sure i'm ready to teach it. still got butterflies thinking about it.

work is, well. work. but productive work! not busy work.

this micro update brought you by the letter s.

yay clouds! [12 Aug 2009|11:46am]
[ mood | rejuvenated ]

it has been freakin' hot for the past few weeks, what with all of that summer stuff going on. even with the fan on all night and just a light sheet, there's been no beating it.

but with the remnants of hurricane felicia giving a little cough on the islands, we're finally getting some great rain and cloud cover, and it's cooled things off quite a bit.

going to see the last week of the hawaii shakespeare festival this weekend; an all male cast of the merry wives of windsor. here's hoping for the hilarity that's implied!

and next week, off to blizzcon. hurray for total geekfest.

hurricane update [06 Aug 2009|07:12am]
[ mood | hungry ]

the five day storm warning now shows that the hurricane will likely turn into a tropical depression by the time it actually gets to the islands, so all is well!

for a given value of well, that is.
