super-duper-update of doom coming in the near future.

breaking an unintentional radio silence to give a quick update.
i'll be moving next month to a new place not far from where i am now, and it's going to rule.
will be doing a long post fleshing out the past two months as soon as i'm settled down there.

| books for ebooks? |
[11 Jan 2012|12:46pm] |
anyone know of a service that allows you to trade in books for ebooks?
i dug around a bit and there doesn't appear to be anything. maybe a ripe business opportunity.

| into the new year |
[08 Jan 2012|10:03am] |
so there's a bit of catch up to do, as much craziness has happened since last post.
mom came over to oahu for new year's, and we all went and saw A Prairie Home Companion with Garrison Keillor live broadcast for new year's which was an amazing experience. jake shimabukuro performed live, along with led kaapana, danny carvalho and jeff peterson.
shortly after new years, the sewage drain pipe from our house to the street decided to start gushing like crazy. fortunately, our landlord was all over it, and by friday they had finished pouring new cement for the driveway over the entirely replaced pipe.
with the new year, rehearsals for the opera have kicked into full gear. on friday we did a performance for the hawaii arts alliance honoree Jean E. Rolls. we ended up with a standing ovation. it is good to be singing again.
i don't really make new years resolutions. instead, i say this:
this year i will start learning to play piano, spend more time increasing my technical knowledge, and get one programming project off the ground.
happy (belated) new year everyone!

i just finished watching a film called "Hot Coffee". in short, it's a film about the work of various business groups to erode the ability of people to be able to redress their grievances against another party, whether private or commercial, through the court system.
i highly recommend watching if you have ever heard the terms "tort reform", "binding arbitration", or about the infamous spilled cup of mcdonald's coffee.

this week is the 2011 asia-pacific economic cooperation summit here in honolulu.
this morning, the chinese president hu jintao landed at the airport.
it was slightly trippy driving to the airport this morning. army and police were stationed on all overpasses as well as freeway exits and entrances, bristling with weaponry. walking into the office, i saw at least 4 secret service personnel milling about, dressed down and with ear pieces.
it hasn't helped tensions that a state department special agent killed a local man earlier this week.
add to that protests, other security closures, bad traffic as a result, and just general bleh.
i think i'll stay home and indoors this weekend.

nothing particularly new going on here. november has come, and with it, the rains have finally started after a rather dry summer.
work is going quite well. i've been diving back into some programming tasks recently, and they've been a lot of fun. it's starting to make me eye actual full-time programming jobs, which might pay a bit more than what i'm making now. but i'd prefer to stay put and just move into a full time programming position at my current company if they made the option available.
life is pretty good. i've been taking better care of myself, which is to say 'doing more than jack' with my free time. i've actually managed to put on some muscle weight this year, which is a great thing, and has been a long term goal of mine. finally also got a good pair of hiking shoes while out in kansas, and am going to be joining some sierra club hikes in the area.
cleaning out the closet again, and getting rid of clothes i just haven't worn this year. good thing is that they're slowly being replaced by clothes that actually fit me well. look ma, i can dress myself!
might be in new york for a visit sometime next spring/summer, we'll see what happens.

so i was going through and sorting paperwork before i disappear to the mainland on thursday. making sure my checkbook balances, etc. in the process of archiving account statements to my files, i happened upon something i'd stuffed in there earlier this year.
namely two complimentary first-class one way upgrades that i got for making "platinum" status on hawaiian airlines last year. that i'd completely forgotten about.
serendipity baby.

i return! er, well. i wasn't really gone to begin with, just quietly lurking.
the show closed last night after an awesome review and great audiences. after the last two performances being a little less-than-wonderful due to a completely disorganized director, this show was a joyous collaboration of organized synchronicity in comparison. the entire cast and crew were great to work with, and the director had a solid vision in mind the entire way through that (gasp!) actually manifested itself in the final presentation.
for the closing party we turned the theatre into a custom dance floor, and used the existing light hang to spice things up.
getting back into the normal day-to-day life is always odd after a show. i'm looking into a few leads for piano lessons, but otherwise just taking the next week or so to relax.
and clean out my closet--goodbye stuff that hangs way too loosely on me. it's a bit of a thing; i'm realizing that a lot of the clothes i have do not fit me very well. so i'm finding things that do, and slowly weeding out what doesn't. i'm hoping to have that done by the end of the year.
so what's new in lj land?
